Daniel "Spike" Farrell never planned on becoming a promising young sorcerer and apprentice to Bo Kyungban. He never planned to become much of anything. He grew up in council estates in Camden, and his drunken father had a blue-collar job that made just enough for them to get by. School never sat well with Spike. The school he attended stank of weed and drugs, and the teachers were barely competent, so he dropped out. Always a pragmatic sort, Spike didn't go for anything unless he saw the use of it.

He worked at a convenience store for a while, and found the world of drugs. A user and a small-time dealer, Spike found ways to supplement his tiny income. It wasn't a lot of money, but it helped. The drugs helped him forget that he was a nobody going nowhere because society didn't care about the likes of him. So he gave up on society.

Then, his life changed. Spike can't remember why or how. The memories were scoured from his mind for his own protection. Suddenly, he found himself in a hidden world within his own hometown of London, a world where magic and monsters were real. It was a world where people -- influential people -- wanted him. At first, he was "rescued" from the streets by J. Ilkin Aylesworth, a prominent film reviewer and indie executive/producer.

But then Bo came across him and took the young man under his wing. Spike thinks Bo and Ilkin are both nuts, but they gave him opportunities that he never would have had before. He's determined to hold onto everything Bo will give him, and he'll let go of it only when it can be pried from his cold, dead fingers.

Spike is not very book-smart, but he's scrappy, clever, resourceful, and tenacious. It's these qualities that led Bo to adopt him as an apprentice. Bo's line of work requires his employees and companions to be sharp and quick-thinking. Spike is still adapting to this strange world of monsters and mayhem, but he's a quick study when he gets hands-on experience.

Whatever happened that awakened Spike's consciousness to the hidden supernatural world also threw him off drugs for good. Spike cannot remember how it happened, and suspects he had a really, really nasty trip. All he knows for sure is the sight of any drugs makes him nervous at best. Even simple medication like aspirin sets off his alarms. He can't imagine snorting or shooting up again.

Spike is a Retainer character for the PC Bo Kyungban in the Walking Shadows World of Darkness campaign.

Spike was definitely on the "naughty" end of the spectrum for a while. ;)

He's reforming, gradually becoming a more functional member of society. Sort of. His mentor is a professional treasure hunter and adventurer, which means he's training Spike to be a well-trained thief and tomb-raider, among other things. Bo definitely appreciates Spike's pragmatic nature.

Spike could definitely still play the "bad boy" role in a pinch, though :) Glad you like him!
