Jolly Roger Koopas by djinnborn Jolly Roger Koopas by djinnborn
The Scourges of Spore Seas, the Terrors of Toadstool Ocean, the Banes of the Bisporean Straits: The Jolly Koopa Rogers!

These emblems strike fear in the hearts of every spore sailor and egg explorer in the Mushroom Kingdom and Dinosaur Land alike!

What the landlubbers don't know is this. Each crew is vying for dominance on the high seas. Merchants and towns pay protection to whichever pirate crew controls their seas. All the crews are different and each one wants to rule the oceans.

Which crew do you support?

The Dry Bones Pirates claim to be the first and original pirate crew. They sail in their ship of bones, and keep coming back no matter how many times you beat them.

Boo Bandits are sneaky, mischievous pirates. Nobody ever sees 'em coming. Tales say if you see a Boo Bandit ship, you know you're safe from it -- or it's already robbed you for all you're worth.

The Shy Guy Sea Raiders are the scourge of land and sea. They drive ships aground and then attack with their spears and other pointy objects, all while hiding behind their masks!

Snifit Scoundrels are widely feared for their marksmanship. It's said a Snifit Scoundrel can shoot the cracker right out of a parrot's mouth from across the ship!

Bullet Buccaneers have sunk more 'shroom ships than any other crew except the Bob-omb Brigands. These heavily-armed ships move slow but pack a lot of firepower.

Phanto's Philchers may not seem like much at first, but they're relentless in their pursuit. Steal from them and they'll hunt you down until the end of your days.

The Raccoon Rovers are feared far and wide. They board enemy ships by flying over the ocean while their own ship stays moored at a safe distance, and their tails can repel almost any attack.

Bob-omb Brigands are the most reckless pirate crew. Never afraid to make suicide runs, once a Bob-omb Brigand starts ticking, he won't be satisfied 'til something explodes.

The Podoboo Pillagers aren't interested in your gold or riches. They're coming to burn your place to the ground. They say the podoboos are made from the spirits of folks whose ships burned up in the Pillagers' fires.

The Magikoopa Marauders are a weaselly bunch of blue-robed, pointy-hatted spellslingers. They hurl magic and wizardry to capture ships and steal treasure.

Spiny Scalawags are feared on the ocean 'cause they always attack from above. That and once you get a spiny infestation, it's a pain to clean up. Literally.

You always know when the Chain Chomp Corsairs because they sound like a pack of baying dogs. Once they latch on, there's no letting go.

The Piranha Plunderers'll eat anything. Some sailors tell tales of Plunderers eating right through a ship to get the loot.

The Hammer Bro Hooligans attack with hammers, boomerangs, even fireballs. They're a loud bunch that's always jumping around and causing a racket.

And the poor Goomba Grafters who nobody really takes seriously. Maybe it's because their "crossbones" is just them after they've been stomped.

Which crew are you gonna join?

This was a fun side project that I've thought about doing since Summer 2010. At first I was just going to do Dry Bones, but as I started working on him, I got more ideas for other characters. The project quickly blossomed into 16 different flags, as you can see above. I'm planning to make shirts and hoodies of these available, so watch this space for details and links. This was great fun, and really helped me learn Illustrator better. The challenge wasn't in figuring out where the shading went or if the anatomy was correct like most of my art. Instead it was in coming up with a fun design. Figuring out some of the crossbones (like the Snifits) was an exciting challenge!

Someone on my Google+ recommended making a MetaKnight pirate flag, which I'll be doing soon. What other flags should I make?

I will upload the individual pictures over the rest of the week. I'll probably put them in Scraps, then transfer them to a gallery so I don't flood your inboxes -- unless you'd like your inboxes flooded with pirate flags. Then I'll just upload them all to the main gallery ;)

EDIT: To fix the ? blocks on the Bullet Bill cannons. I will update these soon to make them skulls instead because duh, Bullet Bill cannons traditionally have skulls.

I got some ideas for new ones. Thwomp pirates, their crossbones can be broken, they stake out certain areas and have never been defeated. The Blooper squid pirates, I guess their crossbones can be tentacles, but I'm not sure about their stats though. And the Cheep Cheep flying fish. I have no idea about their crossbones, but they use high speed and vast numbers to overwhelm their targets.
